When you visit Finland and Norway in the Winter season, I hope you find moments of warmth and joy in all your adventures.

As I reflect on our recent group journey, I can’t help thinking about our winter activities.
I’m reminded of the magic these destinations hold and the warmth they bring to the heart. From snow-draped landscapes to cozy evenings by the fire, these Arctic treasures offer so much more than just the Northern Lights.

Whether you’re dreaming of husky sledding through frozen forests or warming your soul in a traditional Finnish sauna, there’s an adventure waiting for you in Scandinavia.

So, let me take you on a little journey of the best winter activities Finland and Norway have to offer, and maybe you’ll feel inspired to join us on one of our next trips or head over and see these places on your own.

Imagine stepping into a world where the air is crisp, the snow glistens like diamonds, and the only sounds are the gentle jingling of reindeer bells and the excited barking of huskies, ready to take you on an adventure through the Arctic wilderness.

This is winter in Finland and Norway—a place where magic isn’t just a feeling but something you can touch, breathe, and live.

Dog Sledding, Reindeer Safaris & Snow Hotels: A Journey Through the Arctic

Rovaniemi, Finland – The Hometown of Santa Claus

Rovaniemi is a winter wonderland where fairy tales feel real. Here, you can glide through the snow on a reindeer sleigh, feeling like you’ve stepped straight into a Christmas story.

The Sami people, who have lived alongside these beautiful creatures for centuries, will share stories about their traditions and way of life, making this more than just a ride—it’s a connection to the Arctic’s soul.

And then, there are the huskies. These incredible dogs live to run, and the moment they sense adventure ahead, they burst into action, pulling you effortlessly across frozen lakes and snow-covered forests. You’re wrapped in a thick, warm blanket, the icy air stinging your cheeks, and for a moment, the world is just you, the huskies, and the endless white wilderness.

To book, you’ll find fantastic operators like Bearhill Husky and Wild Nordic Finland (we used this company for a few activities) , both of which offer small-group tours with well-cared-for animals and expert guides who make sure you feel the true spirit of Lapland. Plus the Husky park in Lapland you can book direct with, We did a 2.5km ride here at dusk and it was a pinch me moment for sure.

No winter adventure in Scandinavia is complete without stepping into the world of huskies and reindeer. In Finland, we raced through snow-laden forests on sleds pulled by eager huskies. Their energy is infectious, and the ride is exhilarating. Reindeer safaris, on the other hand, are a gentler, more traditional way to experience the Arctic. Imagine gliding silently across the snow while the sleigh bells ring softly—pure magic.

Levi, Finland – A Winter Playground

Levi is one of Finland’s most famous winter destinations, and it’s easy to see why. Beyond the ski slopes, this little Arctic town is home to some of the most breathtaking reindeer experiences. Imagine being wrapped in warm furs, gliding silently through a snow-covered forest under the glow of a thousand stars. These safaris aren’t just about the ride—they’re about slowing down and appreciating the beauty of Lapland.

If husky sledding is calling your name, Levi Husky Park offers immersive experiences where you get to meet and bond with the dogs before your ride. The thrill of driving your own sled through the untouched Arctic landscape is something you’ll never forget.

Saariselkä, Finland – Pure Arctic Wilderness

If you’re looking for a quieter, more intimate adventure, Saariselkä is the place to go. This region is home to vast open landscapes, rolling snowy hills, and some of the most peaceful dog sledding and reindeer safaris in Finland. Aurora Husky and Lapland Safaris Saariselkä are well-known here, offering both daytime adventures and night rides under the Northern Lights.

Norway – A Gateway to Arctic Dreams

Crossing into Norway, Tromsø is where adventure meets breathtaking scenery. It’s one of the best places to experience a full-day husky sledding adventure, where you can even learn to drive the sled yourself. The backdrop……. just imagine towering snow-covered mountains, frozen fjords, and a sky that shifts from soft pastels to deep Arctic blues.

If you’re looking for an authentic reindeer experience, local Sami guides will take you deep into the Norwegian wilderness, sharing their rich culture and allowing you to try traditional reindeer sledding, a mode of transport that has been used for centuries. Tromsø Arctic Reindeer and Lyngsfjord Adventures offer some of the most incredible tours in the area.

Some experiences stay with you forever, and our day with the reindeer in Inari, Finland, was pure magic. Guided by the warmth and wisdom of our incredible Sámi host, Anne from Angeli Reindeer Farm, we stepped into a world where ancient traditions and deep respect for nature intertwine.

Up close, we met the reindeer she had lovingly rescued, as well as those that roam wild and free—yet return in the harsh winter months for nourishment and care. Anne shared stories of their unique system, where every reindeer is known by name, and how they live in harmony with the land, using nature’s gifts to sustain both themselves and these magnificent animals.

It was a rare and beautiful glimpse into a way of life that feels almost mythical, and one we will cherish forever. If you ever find yourself in this part of the world, a visit to Angeli Reindeer Farm is an experience you won’t want to miss.

For a truly unforgettable Arctic experience, Snowhotel Kirkenes is an absolute must. Our two-hour husky ride was nothing short of magical. Bundled up from head to toe in Arctic gear, we braced for the extreme temperatures, but the chill was soon forgotten as we took off into the night. The huskies, eager and full of energy, raced through the snow-covered landscape, guided only by the soft glow of our driver’s headlamp. Tiny snowflakes danced in the air, landing on our faces like we had stepped inside a living snow globe.

Halfway through, we stopped by a crackling fire, warming our hands and sipping on hot Glogi or Glogg—a deliciously spiced warm berry juice that felt like a hug from the inside. As we set off again, the final stretch took us gliding across a frozen fjord, the silence of the Arctic wrapping around us. It was one of those moments where time seemed to stand still, leaving us breathless in the beauty of it all.

Thrills on Ice: Snowmobiling Adventures in Finland & Norway

There’s nothing quite like the exhilaration of snowmobiling through the Arctic wilderness. The crisp Arctic air, the hum of the engine, and the thrill of racing across a frozen landscape—it’s an experience that awakens every sense.

During our adventure in Finland, we booked with Wild Nordic Finland, a fantastic company that made sure everything was seamless from start to finish. Some of us had never ridden a snowmobile before, but that didn’t matter. Before setting off, our guide took us through a full safety briefing, explaining exactly how to operate the snowmobiles, the hand signals he would use to check in on us, and what to do if we needed help. The setup made us feel completely safe and supported, even as we ventured deep into the snow-covered wilderness.

We rode two per snowmobile, switching drivers halfway through so everyone had the chance to take control. It was incredible to see the transformation in those who started off nervous—within minutes, they were grinning ear to ear, fully embracing the thrill of the ride. The moment we took off, the Arctic revealed its magic. The trail wound through towering forests of snow-laden trees, their branches bending under the weight of fresh powder. The first hints of daylight painted the sky in soft pastels, casting a dreamy glow over the untouched landscape. It felt like riding through a winter fairytale.

In Norway, snowmobiling is just as breathtaking, with endless routes through mountain plateaus and across frozen fjords. If you’re looking to book an unforgettable experience, Tromsø Safari and Lyngsfjord Adventure are two excellent options, offering guided snowmobiling tours through some of Norway’s most stunning winter landscapes.

Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or just looking for a unique way to immerse yourself in the Arctic, snowmobiling is an adventure like no other. The combination of speed, scenery, and sheer freedom makes it an experience you’ll never forget.

Extreme Temperatures – Be Prepared!

The day we went, it was a bone-chilling -27°C (-16°F)—a true test of just how extreme Arctic conditions can be. The cold isn’t just something you feel; it hits you like a wave the moment you step outside. Even though you’ll feel incredibly warm indoors as you layer up, the second you start riding and the wind rushes against you, it’s a whole different story.

Thankfully, we were provided with snow overalls, socks, boots, and balaclavas, and I highly recommend wearing everything offered. The more layers, the better! One mistake I made was taking my hand out of my glove to record a video. It was just for a few seconds, but in that short time, I got frostbite on my hand. It took the entire rest of my trip—three weeks—to heal. So, if you plan to take photos or videos, make sure you invest in touchscreen-friendly gloves or have a GoPro set up in advance.

Overall this was one of the groups favourite activities on our trip so we all highly recommend it.

Embrace the Hygge: Saunas & Winter Cuisine in Finland

There’s something about winter in Scandinavia that invites you to slow down, embrace the moment, and truly soak in the magic of the Arctic lifestyle. And if there’s one thing that defines this way of life, it’s the art of hygge—that deep sense of warmth, comfort, and connection that the Nordic people have perfected.

The Ultimate Sauna Experience at Lake Inari

One of our most unforgettable experiences was during our stay at Lake Inari Mobile Cabins, where we spent two nights in a cozy cabin floating on a frozen lake. The setting alone was something out of a dream, but one of the highlights was their traditional Finnish sauna, nestled in the snow.

After bundling up and making our way from the main house in slippers through the icy landscape, we were instantly welcomed by the rich, earthy scent of the sauna wood. There’s something so soothing about stepping into that intense warmth after a day out in the Arctic chill. We could feel our bodies unwinding, the heat wrapping around us, melting away the cold.

But the real fun began when we decided to take things up a notch. After getting properly overheated, we ran outside and flung ourselves into the snow, laughing and squealing as we made snow angels in nothing but our bathers (togs). It was a total shock to the system, but the rush of adrenaline and the sheer joy of the moment made it absolutely unforgettable. Racing back into the sauna, feeling our skin tingle from the cold, we couldn’t stop grinning and reliving the moment.

If you ever get the chance to experience a real Finnish sauna in winter, do it—and if you’re feeling brave, take the leap into the snow. It’s a feeling like no other!

Urban Sauna Culture: Warming Up in Helsinki & Oslo

While the Arctic wilderness offers some of the most authentic, off-the-grid sauna experiences, the Nordic sauna culture isn’t just reserved for remote lakes and snowy forests. In cities like Helsinki and Oslo, saunas are a way of life—a daily ritual that brings people together, offering both relaxation and a deep connection to local traditions.

Helsinki: The Sauna Capital of the World

Finland is home to over 3 million saunas (for a population of just 5.5 million!), so it’s no surprise that Helsinki is the heart of modern sauna culture. Here are a few of the ones that you might like to visit:

🔹 Löyly – A sleek, architectural masterpiece right on the Baltic Sea, Löyly offers both traditional wood-burning saunas and a stunning sea-view terrace where you can cool off in the fresh air. For the truly brave, there’s also the chance to plunge into the icy sea between sauna sessions—a true Finnish experience!

🔹 Allas Sea Pool – Right in the heart of Helsinki, this floating sauna complex sits along the harbor, offering a mix of hot saunas and cold seawater pools with panoramic city views. There’s something surreal about watching the ferries go by as you soak in the warmth.

🔹 Kotiharjun Sauna – One of the last remaining public wood-burning saunas in Helsinki, Kotiharjun is as traditional as it gets. No luxury, no frills—just pure, authentic Finnish sauna culture where locals and visitors sit side by side, sweating out the cold.

Each sauna had its own vibe, but what stood out the most was the sense of community—strangers chatting as they cooled off outside, the laughter of friends unwinding after a long day, the lines to experience some of these were long, so make sure you plan your day and book in. It’s popular.

Oslo: A Nordic Take on Sauna Culture

While Finland is the undisputed king of saunas, Norway has fully embraced the tradition in its own way—especially in Oslo, where floating saunas have become a huge trend.

🔹 Salt Sauna – One of the coolest spots in Oslo, Salt combines art, music, and sauna culture into a unique experience right by the Oslo Opera House. The contrast between the hot sauna and the icy Oslofjord waters makes for an unforgettable dip! (or so they say, we chickened out on this one)

🔹 KOK Floating Saunas – The scenic, floating saunas of KOK, where you can book a private session and enjoy the serene views of the fjord while the steam works its magic. For the full experience, take a refreshing dip in the icy water—if you dare!

What we loved about both Helsinki and Oslo was how sauna culture is deeply woven into daily life—it’s not just about warming up; it’s about pressing pause, recharging, and embracing the Nordic way of living. Whether in a sleek city sauna or a rustic wooden hut in the Arctic, there’s something magical about stepping into the heat, letting the stress melt away, and fully immersing yourself in the moment.

And if you ever find yourself in a Nordic sauna, here’s a little tip: Don’t be shy! Strike up a conversation, embrace the experience, and—if you’re feeling adventurous—jump into the icy waters or flop in to the snow afterward. It’s a shock to the system, but trust me, you’ll feel more alive than ever.

2. A Taste of Lapland: Simple Yet Soulful Arctic Cuisine

Of course, no winter adventure is complete without indulging in Scandinavian cuisine, and our trip through Finland and Norway was full of memorable meals.

One of our most elevated dining experiences was at Ravintola Aanaar, a stunning restaurant where we had our first taste of reindeer—a dish that quickly became a staple as we traveled through the Arctic. The flavours were more subtle than expected but deeply comforting, perfectly suited for the cold winter nights. (Some loved it and others not so much, maybe a little awkward thinking of Rudolph haha)

But sometimes, the simplest meals are the most unforgettable.

At Lake Inari, we were invited to a tiny, rustic cabin called theGrill Hut, where our host, Atte, welcomed us with a fire crackling in the center of the room. He had been slow-cooking fresh fish and root vegetables in foil over the open fire, and as we gathered around, he shared stories of Finnish traditions and life in the Arctic.

The meal was incredibly simple—no fancy plating, no elaborate ingredients—just perfectly cooked, fire-roasted flavours, enjoyed in the warmth of the hut while snow fell softly outside. It was magic.

For anyone visiting Lapland, we highly recommend a short drive and stay at Lake Inari Mobile Cabins. It’s not just about the unique accommodations but the genuine connection to Arctic culture, nature, and the incredible warmth of the people who live here.

Whether you’re sweating it out in a Finnish sauna, making snow angels under the Northern Lights, or sharing stories by a fire over a simple but perfect meal, these are the moments that define the true magic of Lapland.

Norway in a Nutshell: A Journey Through a Winter Wonderland

Lastly on our adventure, Norway in a Nutshell, this is more than just a scenic route—it’s a journey through some of the most breathtaking landscapes on Earth, a storybook adventure of snow-dusted fjords, charming villages, and winding railways that weave through the heart of winter magic.

We began in Bergen, a city that feels like a Nordic fairytale, with its colourful wooden houses lining the harbor and the crisp sea air wrapping around us. From there, we boarded the train to Voss, watching as the scenery transformed—steep cliffs dusted with snow, frozen rivers glistening like silver ribbons, and forests so still they seemed to be holding their breath.

At Voss, we checked into the historic Fleischers Hotel, a place straight out of another era. The afternoon we arrived, we took the gondola up to the ski resort, where the views were nothing short of spectacular—endless white peaks meeting the sky, when the clouds weren’t enveloping us. Skiers carving their way down powdery slopes, and the peaceful silence of the mountains wrapping around us like a soft winter cloak.

Then, the journey continued and took us to Flåm, a tiny fjord-side village that looks like it belongs on a postcard. cracking our way through the ice as we floated down the stunning Fjords on our way. We warmed up with a hearty dinner at the Flåmsbrygga Hotel. If you’re looking for a Viking experience then this is a must.

But the true highlight? The Flåm Railway.

This wasn’t just a train ride—it was a portal into another world. As the train climbed steep, winding tracks, we passed frozen waterfalls suspended in time, tiny red cottages nestled against icy cliffs, and valleys blanketed in a dreamlike stillness. It felt as if we had stepped inside a snow globe, the kind where you shake it gently and watch the world sparkle.

The journey ended in Oslo, a vibrant city where modern meets tradition, but the echoes of our time in the fjords and mountains still lingered.

If you ever find yourself in Norway in winter, this journey is an absolute must. It’s not just about seeing the landscape—it’s about feeling the magic of the Arctic, the quiet beauty of snow-covered fjords, and the adventure of traveling through a land where nature still reigns supreme.

Why Winter Adventures Are Better with a Group

The best part of our trip wasn’t just the breathtaking landscapes or the thrilling activities—it was the people. Sharing these experiences with others created bonds that will last a lifetime.

From our first snowmobiling adventure, filled with excited shouts and laughter, to huddling around a campfire in a cozy hut, catching on film the loudest snores from one of our travellers (still a great laugh to this moment) the magic was in the connection. Some of the best moments? The kind that turn into inside jokes—those “you had to be there” memories that make group travel so special.

This is exactly why I love small group travel. It’s about more than just the destination—it’s about the friendships, the shared awe, and the kind of joy that’s even better when experienced together.

If this kind of adventure speaks to you, why not join one of our small group tours? We take care of the details, so you can focus on making memories, sharing laughter, and saying “yes” to experiences you’ll never forget.
